The Better India

written by Dhimant Parekh on Thursday, January 04, 2007

I couldn't stop raving about the movie Children of Heaven to one of my quadmates and after finding myself running short of an audience, I decided to write about it.
A Farsi movie that was nominated for an Academy Award in the best foreign film category, this movie steals your heart and leaves you smiling and feeling good the entire day.

A must watch for those who are tired of watching conceit, lies, violence, sex (okay, just added in here for the effect), mushy crap, family drama etc. Children of Heaven is about a kid who loses his younger sister's shoes. Growing up in a poor family with a struggling father, the kids find it difficult to ask for a new pair of shoes. Thus begins the story of a well-kept secret - the secret of the lost shoes. Excellent acting by the kids and beautiful cinematography, especially the final marathon scene.

Coming to the more important part - The reason why I really loved this movie so much is that after a long time I came across characters who were genuine to themselves. Characters who were devoid of any of the million human emotions that make the world a not-so-good place. The children were moulds of innocence. No trace of guile, no trace of mischief. Just pure flow of goodness and purity from their hearts. That won me over. Primarily because I haven't come across someone like that in quite a while.

Why is it so difficult to make movies based on the collective good of humanity? Why is it so easy to engage an audience by offering them only the "good vs. bad" plots?
Why is the "bad" always needed to enhance the "good"?
Children of Heaven shows us that "good" alone can indeed be the protagonist. A beautiful, heart-warming movie.

Ladies and gentlemen, my recommendation - Must Watch.
