Socrates and Plato (Woohoo! Whistling and applause in the background).
Alright, let me continue.
Socrates and Plato are sitting in the courtyard sipping on tea.
An army of ants are marching towards the spilt sugar.
Socrates is staring at the ants, deciphering a pattern in life's miniscule movements.
Plato is looking around on the road in order to decipher a pattern in life's not-so-miniscule movements.
Plato: "Er...its sort of strange isn't it? I mean, sitting here not doing anything all day?"
Socrates looks at him and looks back at the ants.
Plato nervously wiggles in his chair and starts gazing at the sky.
Socrates: "What is the strange part? Sitting here or not doing anything?"
Plato: "Well, not doing anything, I suppose?"
Socrates: "Define not doing anything."
Plato raises his eyebrows and lets out a low whistle.
Plato: "Not doing anything is just sitting here and not doing anything."
Socrates looks at him.
Plato: "Ok, well, not doing anything is not to be engaged in any activity and continuing to be in that state for a significant period of time.
Socrates: Is thinking a part of that "any activity"?
Plato (thinking for a while): "Yes."
Socrates: "So not doing anything includes not thinking as well?"
Plato (thinking for a longer while): "Yes."
Socrates: "Do we ever do that? Do we ever not think?"
Plato stares into his cup.
Socrates: "What exactly is a significant period of time?"
Plato: "Er, well, I will go get some more tea."
The spilt sugar has been cleared off by now and the ants are going back to their underground homes.
For the ants, all the work got done while the masters were defining lack of activity.
Socrates changes the track on his iPod to play Block Rockin' Beats by the Chemical Brothers.
